If there was one criticism of Evolve—and a fair one at that—it’s that while the combat was exciting and the gameplay was fresh, it did begin to stagnant after a while. With only so many classes and even less monsters, it was easy for gamers to tire of the same ol’ routine, with very little new or exciting to really shake things up. Fortunately, Turtle Rock Studios isn’t deaf to the desires of its audience, and has thus released a new mode into the game: Arena.

What is Arena mode? Well, it’s much the same as a regular match, except instead of tracking the monster in a cunning game of wits, the roles of cat and mouse switching as the tides turn, it just throws the monster and the human players in an enclosed space and lets them go at it.

...so it tries to freshen things up by… making more of what we expect come faster?

Okay, but seriously: Arena mode puts the monster and the players in one of five pre-determined locations in the games fourteen maps. The goal: Survive. The monster starts at level two, and while there’s wildlife and it can level up, it’s much harder to pull off since there are so few places to hide. The matches are best of three, with the arena changing between matches, but the basic map used remains the same. You’re just taken to another one of the five pre-determined locations on the same map.

Seems straightforward. While I may have been facetious in saying it won’t improve the core criticism of the game, it’s still a good addition; it allows for faster matches so we could play a round or three when we have someplace we need to be but want to fit a little Evolve battle in before we have to go. If it’s enough to renew interest in the title, well… hard to say. But not all additions exist to lure in new customers… some are best served merely satisfying current ones. And Arena mode will do that fantastically.

Plus, the new mode is free. Hard to beat free!
