As expected, we got a hearty helping more of Rage 2 at this year's press event by Bethesda. This time, it was all the gameplay we could ask for. It began with a live performance by Andrew W.K. which shouldn't have been that surprising. After the mini concert, he and his band went on his way, and new information about Rage 2 began.
The player takes the role of Walker, the last ranger of the wasteland. There, players will experience new weapons, more diverse vehicles and weaponry, and more environments than before. They need to fend off psychos, mutants, and militias in order to find a rare artifact that can take down the authority.
The gameplay video itself starts behind the wheel. We see the player drive a sci-fi mad max-style car as they take out other vehicles, each with different weapons equipped. Upon reaching their destination, Walker steps out of the vehicle and engages in a firefight with a team of reckless punks. We see implosion grenades, anti-gravity grenades, rifles, and even multiple wingstick settings.
The gameplay trailer kicked off with a futuristic vehicle driving through a desert, chasing down other vehicles. Humans with extreme punk aesthetics have banded together, sitting on shipping creates outside of deteriorating buildings, while an advertisement for Rage 2s Collector Edition plays on a CRT television set. All the while, a promo for the Rage 2 Collector's Edition plays on a nearby CRT.
We first heard about Rage 2 when Walmart accidentally listed a number of unannounced video games, including Rage 2. This prompted Bethesda to release both a live action and a gameplay trailer for the game. The original Rage was met with mixed reception, namely for a less-than-satisfactory ending. Rage 2 seems to be a solid chance at redemption.
Rage 2 will be developed in cooperation between Avalanche Studios, best known for the Just Cause game series, and id Software, of Doom fame. It will be releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in Spring of 2019.
