We previously reported on the Cold War level tensions happening in EVE Online. It was estimated to be that of a "million dollar battle." Unfortunately, we've been lied to.

Said battle took place last night, and it did not yield $1,000,000 in lost assets. According to tacked estimations, the battle ended up costing around 560 billion ISK. While that may seem like a lot, it translates into approximately $4,000. What happened? How could an expectedly gigantic battle only result in 0.04 percent of what people were prepared for? According to those at the scene of the event, there were network issues.

One interesting aspect of EVE: Online is the single, massive world. Unlike most MMOs, EVE doesn't have multiple servers and worlds to choose from, and all players are in one universe playing together. When battles are fought, and hundreds of players gather in one place, the developers have to slow down the rate of the game in order to handle the extensive processing load. In the game, this is a gimmick referred to as "time dilation."

Nearly 6,000 players had all gathered together to fight in this million dollar battle. This was a new record according to CCP for most players in a single system. This proved too much for the game to handle, as numerous players' game clients were crashing, and even more, struggled to maintain a connection.

Maybe a million dollar battle is a bit much. It's unclear how this will change the current political standing of the EVE universe. Perhaps a smaller battle will decide its fate.
