In Alamagordo, New Mexico, the ET landfill has been unearthed, and the legendary lost cartridge trove has been unearthed. However, disputes are arising on who should get how many cartridges, and if others should get any at all. The Smithsonian, as well as museums in the New Mexico area have all requested a slice of the digsite for historical and display purposes. The two companies funding the dig, LightBox Entertainment and Fuel Entertainment, believe they should get 52 cartridges per company due to the resources and money they've put towards the dig, which amounted to about $50,000 in total.
Honestly, it all sounds pretty fair to me. The guys put down a lot of money for the work teams, and it's fair to say that they deserve a good portion of the goodies they find. At the same time, though, the museums (ESPECIALLY the Smithsonian) should get at least a couple of cartridges for the sake of legend! I mean, it was decades ago that they buried those cartridges in sheer horror at the thought of the game being such a gigantic flop, it's important to tell that story and make somewhat of an example out of it.
The hype train can only go so far, people. Let's not wreck it.
