Wow, things got off to a bleak start this Monday—maybe I can help lighten the mood with an amazing Team Fortress 2 fan movie?
Way back in August of last year, a trailer for what appeared to be a rather epic Source Filmmaker project was released on Youtube called “End of the Line”—it looked fantastic, but at the same time, well, it was an unfunded project done by enthused fans, and you know how things like that turn out. Generally, the odds of it ever being finished is 50/50 and the odds of it being as good as it looks is less so.
Well, yesterday, the final version of End of the Line was released—and boy, does it knock it out of the park! Check out the video below.
The project was made by James McVinnie, who has worked on giant mods and Bioware before, so he’s got a little more practice than a lot of other small-time Source filmmakers, which probably explains the exceptionally high quality and attention to detail. But at this point it’s grown bigger than simply a fan project: Valve itself has, in a manner of speaking, jumped onto the hype train, and has released a new update with new items, weapons and rare treats that have been released alongside the video—the proceeds of which will go directly to the creator of the film itself, and the people who made the items.
It’s pretty amazing to see a company back up a fan like that, and even more amazing to see how well-loved a seven-year-old game can be to inspire this kind of effort.
