According to an announcement on the Rocket League website, Psyonix is joining the Epic Games umbrella of developers. They reassure fans that this decision will not change the way they treat Rocket League and that the eSports ecosystem around the game will be unchanged.
"In the short term, nothing will change at all! We're still committed to providing Rocket League with frequent updates that have new features, new content, and new ways to play the game for as long as you'll have us.
In the long-term, we expect to bring Rocket League to the Epic Games store and to leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways we couldn't do on our own before. We believe that bringing Rocket League to new audiences with more support is a win for everybody."
It's not clear what "leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways we couldn't do before" means exactly. This might just be a new marketing and advertising budget, or access to various Epic Games user information. We don't know.
According to a report by Variety, the game will come to the Epic Games Storefront later this year, in which it will be removed from Steam. It has not been confirmed by Psyonix or Epic at this time, however.
But let's be frank. This would not surprise us in the least.
