Epic Games Buys Megamall to Turn into Headquarters

Talk about a power play.

In case you've somehow missed it, Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite and the Epic Game Store, has a lot of money. Most of the billions they earn vanish into the ether, pocketed by investors, executives, and occasionally even employees, but rarely Epic Games decides to actually spend the money it earns as a company, and today, it announced it was using a small, tiny percentage of its profits to buy itself a former megamall in Cary, North Carolina.

Costing about 95$ million dollars, this enormous structure is 980,000 square-feet and 87-acres, which means it's about the size of 50 football fields. Originally a shopping center (as the name might suggest), Epic Games is going to renovate it from the ground up to turn it into their new base of operations, which makes a lot more sense than my original assumption, that they were going to turn it into a live-action Fortnite arena so they could watch children shoot each other to death for their entertainment.

Of course, a big purchase like this is bound to get politicians excited, and Cary mayor Harold Weinbrecht had nothing but breathless, excited praise for this expansion project:

Were extremely proud that Epic has chosen to call Cary home for their new global headquarters, and we greatly appreciate the companys recognition of Carys existing assets as well as the unlimited potential of the area for their growing business. We look forward to continuing to work closely and collaboratively with the Epic team as they conceptualize their new campus, and were honored to partner with them on this exciting new development.

By and large, it's not too exciting when a big company that makes big money spends that big money, but with how public Epic Games has been getting as of late, I think it's important to remind people that they're loaded with cash and they're not afraid to use it. And not just to try and out-money the world's biggest tech companies.
