There has been a noticeable number of login issues and server instability in the popular 3rd person shooter, Fortnite. Developers Epic has made a statement on the community forums explaining what the problem was.
The Fortnite cloud services have been affected by the Meltdown vulnerability. Meltdown is a hardware vulnerability that can happen with certain microprocessors, that allows a rogue process to read any physical, kernel or other processes' mapped memory, regardless of whether or not it should be able to do so. This is a dangerous bug if abused and can result in extreme breaches in cybersecurity.
Epic pushed updates to their systems that would resolve this vulnerability. The problem is that this update resulted in a significant increase in CPU usage on their cloud services, in which the game relies heavily on to maintain functionality. With usage more than doubling, this has understandably caused some gameplay issues.
Epic asks for fans' patience while they continue to roll out updates to their services to try and resolve this issue. Though unfortunately no time frame can be estimated as to when things will return to normality.
As inconvenient as this may be, this does protect not only Epic's secret information but the information of those playing Fornite. All we can do is wait and hope for a speedy resolution.
