English Fire Emblem: Fates Won't Have that Anti-Gay Drug

Without context, that's quite the startling headline, isn't it?

Fire Emblem: Fates, in addition to being the next (and apparently, a quite good) addition to the Fire Emblem series, has gotten quite a bit of attention for being the first Fire Emblem game with a gay option--with each game having a gay man or woman that could pair up with your avatar regardless of their gender. And while this news was initially met with excitement from the fans, things turned… weird… not soon after the Japanese got their hands on the game for the first time.

Like every other Fire Emblem game, you have to undergo a little quest to seduce the character of your choice… or, more specifically, you have to level up your relationship in battle, then watch skits involving the two characters involved. The problem was, if you were a male character and you had your eyes on Soleil, who’s a tried-and-true lesbian, you could still hook up with her… if you first spiked her drink without her knowledge with a ‘magic powder’ that made her see all males as females, and vice-versa.

You can see why this might be troubling.

Fortunately, while Nintendo was brainless enough to initially think that was a good idea, they’re not so brainless as to still think it’s a good idea, and they’re recently filed a statement to Nintendo World Report, that for once, Nintendo would be censoring something that kind of deserves it.

“In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.”

So, yeah, it’s been cut. Now, we don’t know how it’ll be cut, or if anything will take its place, or if the male/female romance of Soleil would simply be removed entirely. But, if it means less drug-fueled romance in the next Fire Emblem game, it won’t be any terrible loss for us. There are other fish in the sea.
