Endless Space 2, a strategic space opera developed by Amplitude Studios for PC, recently held a free to play weekend on Steam. To spice things up, they also held a "community challenge" in which if enough new players tried the game during the free weekend, additional content will be released.
Ranging from ship modules, to planets, to galaxies, this challenge had 6 tiers to unlock. And last night the final reward tier was reached.
What strikes me as odd is that nowhere could I find what number they were striving for. The reward tiers don't give a goal number, nor does the challenge details or the progress reports from the game's official Twitter. This leads me to believe that they intended to include all the content regardless, and the player count goals were simply arbitrary. The fact that the final reward tier was unlocked right at the edge of the final free day only further builds my suspicion.
Legitimate or not, the promotion did extremely well. Ever since around June of this year, player count has hovered between 300 to 500. This free weekend and player challenge have boosted the reported player count to as high as 16,000 players at a given time.
You can find Endless Space 2 on Steam for $39.99. Though at the time of writing this, the game is on sale for 50% off.
