What a better way to kick of this years E3 than with the overwhelmingly anticipated Elden Ring? Not only do we get another look at the game, we get story, gameplay, and even a release date.
All of this comes from the Summer Games Fest showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley. The presentation concluded with a new trailer for Elden Ring, the upcoming action RPG by From Software (the people who made Dark Souls).
This is the first time were seeing substantial information about the game since its reveal in E3 2019. All weve known is that the game was being developed in collaboration with acclaimed fantasy writer George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones). That hasn't stopped fans from becoming tremendously excited about the game. Even Xbox's Phil Spencer called it the game director's "most ambitious game."
Based on what we saw in the trailer, the game appears to follow the story of The Tarnished, as they travel through a fantastical land to seize power and control from something called The Golden Order. During this, theyll encounter a variety of opposing forces, including strange and dangerous creatures.
Gameplay wise, it appears to be rather similar to the core mechanics of the Dark Souls series, with the player navigating a 3D environment to dodge, block, and attack their foes. There are different weapons and magic to use and armor to wear. They can even summon ghostly allies to aid them in battle. They can ride a horse now, though, so thats new.
And best of all, we know when to expect it. Elden Ring has an official release date of January 21, 2022. Itll be available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. If you get the game on the older generation console, a free upgrade to the next gen versions will be available. If you want to soak it in more, check out the official Japanese website. Theres an English site, too. But it doesnt have all the good screenshots and content.
