You hate to see this kind of thing happen... but it makes for good news. Earlier this morning, a 7 minute trailer for the next of EA's Battlefield series codenamed "Omaha" appeared online (and was swiftly pulled). Since the genie has already been let out of the bottle, EA official confirmed the game's existence and also said that it will be coming out this fall.
Now you might be thinking... "isn't it a little too soon from Battlefield 4?". Traditionally the series isn't on the same fixed annual schedule as Call of Duty- but then the series also hasn't managed to reach Call of Duty numbers. This year's release is possible thanks to Visceral Games, the studio that brought us the Dead Space series. Visceral is also definitely taking the series in their own direction, ditching the military theme and putting you in the shoes of police officers and criminals.
While this idea has been recently done very successfully by the PayDay series, there is definitely that chaotic Battlefield feel to it. Much like how Call of Duty is enlisting Kevin Spacey this year to boost their story cred, Battlefield Hardline also features plenty of Hollywood talent- some even from Spacey's own House of Cards show.
This definitely was going to be a big reveal on stage at EA's press conference, but they still have Star Wars reveals up their sleeves (unless those get leaked too). In fact Visceral is also working on a single player Star Wars game, recently nabbing one of the key writers from Naughty Dog's Uncharted series. The change of direction is also a very welcomed breath of fresh air... rather than just another military shooter in another time period. This, combined with Turtlerock's innovative Evolve, I'd say my interest in online shooters is now higher than it has been in the last 5 years.
Here is the trailer, hopefully the link will still be active when you read this.
