EA, when reached for comment by Kotaku regarding the closing, had this to say:
We are closing the EA Mythic location in Fairfax, Virginia, as we concentrate mobile development in our other studio locations. We are working with all impacted employees to provide assistance in finding new opportunities, either within EA or with other companies via an upcoming job fair.
Mythic Entertainment was founded in 1995, and while they weren't quite as esteemed as some companies or produced quite as many games, they were dependable and reliable creators of fun content for the PC. It's unfortunate they had to end with a whimper rather than a bang, as the last game they produced was the largely hated and rightfully loathed mobile remake of Dungeon Keeper.
EA has gone on record saying that it wants to shift much of its focus on mobile game development, and has acted on that intention before, laying of several employees in their Salt Laike City staff in a restructuring effort earlier this year. It seems Mythic Entertainment is just another victem of EA's shifting priorities.
It's good to see that the people working in the studio will be getting help for re-employment, but it's still sad to see such an old veteran studio break up. They will be missed.
...for the most part, I mean, that Dungeon Keeper game was REALLY bad.
