EA is Also Skipping E3 in Favor of EA PLAY

One more publisher opting out of the biggest gaming event of the year.

E3 has increasingly found itself struggling to stay relevant as the years pass on and more and more developers decide to opt out of attending in favor of doing their own thing. Sony is skipping this year’s E3, for example, and in the past, Nintendo has been known to bypass E3 in favor of doing their own thing (which make sense, as their Nintendo Directs have become a genuine source of hype within the gaming community). And now EA is, once again, opting to skip E3 entirely, even omitting any kind of press conference, to focus entirely on another year of EA PLAY, a sort of big, playable demo station that runs a few days before E3.

So starting on June 7 and going to June 9, EA will be hosting the event, which they promise will be “less talk, more play.” It’s said to include playable demo stations, exclusively reveals, “content creators” streaming, developer talk, and breaking news.

Tickets will be available next month, but apparently, it’s free for the public to attend. Over the next coming weeks and months, they’ll start to release things like programs, ticket availability, and what games will be on display, so you can keep your eyes peeled for that if you want.

The real question is what kind of stuff we can expect. Obviously, a huge chunk will be devoted to EA sports, and I don’t think it’s unfair to assume there’ll be some Apex Legends as well – maybe even a small tournament. It might also be the perfect place to announce or tease an expansion for Anthem, especially if they’re sticking with it for the long haul, although announcing a paid expansion only a few months after the game is released would probably be a bad look for EA.

Still. All speculation out of me. Although if EA is anything, it’s unsurprising.
