Battlefield 1, the new game from EA that's been earning praise inversely to the criticism Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has been receiving, is set in World War 1, an exciting and fresh time of trench warfare, mass deaths via chemical weapons, and complicated political struggles that lead to millions of pointless deaths. Not exactly as glorious as the largely black-and-white struggle against the Nazi regime, but at least it's new, and more importantly, not set in freaking space. Not that Battlefield could ever take place in space... I mean, there are no fields up there...

But I digress. EA's pretty high up on their high horse now, and in a recent chat with BBC, EA Boss Patrick Soderlund decided to use this opportunity to chat about the game a bit, and tease at what may come.

Specifically, he said:

"In Battlefield 1 there are lots of RPG-type elements, in terms of un-lockable items or in the ways you can progress in the game, even though it's a shooter. If you look back a few years you were either in the action space, the shooter space or the driver space. You're seeing a lot of genre blending now. The live online elements of these games make them different to what they were four years ago as well. Destiny is different to what we're doing with Battlefield 1 but at the same time I think you'll see more blending between these genres in future. I think it's exciting that as gamers we can now play multiple types of experiences in one given game."

And how does this tie into Battlefield 1?

"There's so much here that gamers haven't seen before. World War One started on horseback and during the four years of conflict people ended up in submarines, tanks and airplanes. It was an incredible technical evolution. In World War One you could bring a shovel to a gun fight and be quite successful and the team has explored that type of combat."

So that's some exciting but ultimately predictable self-hype. The interesting part came when he admitted that he was in talks with Nintendo, and that there was a very real possibility that this new Battlefield game will find its way to the Nintendo NX. Did he outright say it? No. But he certainly hinted at it strongly enough that if it wasn't true, I'd be surprised.

You can check out the interview yourself here, if you'd like. Absolutely worth a read if you're a battlefield fan. For the rest of us, though... it's been a long time since we've seen an EA game--let alone a Battlefield game--on a Nintendo console. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes up.
