When we heard way back in 2017 that Visceral was being shut down, we also heard about a brand-new Uncharted-inspired single-player Star Wars game that apparently the studio had been working on for a while now, which was a big reason why EA decided to shut down the office in the first place. As it turns out, EA had very little interest in publishing a traditional single-player game, and when Visceral was formally given the EA-branded boot, what little work had been done on the title was sent over to EA Vancouver, who had every intention of creating a, you guessed it, multiplayer-focused open world service game.
Not a whole lot to be excited about, but people like Star Wars games, and since EA is still the only company that can make them anymore, a lot of people were still reasonably excited for what EA Vancouver, the largest office in EA’s control, would ultimately do with the project.
Turns out, their ultimate plan with the project was to shut it down: at least, according to three people familiar with the project who spoke with Kotaku.
The project – once known as Ragtag but was redubbed as Orca when taken over by the Vancouver office – was supposed to be an open-world game where you played either as a scoundrel or a bounty hunter, where you could do work for the different factions that make up the Star Wars universe. Unfortunately, when EA executives saw the game’s development roadmap, and how long it was supposed to take, they decided to scrap (or pause, some are hoping) development to focus on a smaller-scale game that can come out sooner. The date mentioned was 2020, which could very well make this new project a launch title for next-gen systems.
The good news is that the cancellation of the project has not lead to any layoffs. The bad news, of course, is everything else.
But what’s one more highly-anticipated yet canceled Star Wars game?
