EA and DICE Releasing Free Battlefront DLC, Map and Modes

At the right price.

If there was one problem with Star Wars: Battlefront, the general consensus was there simply wasn’t enough of it. Praise came from all angles for it’s stellar gameplay and intuitive yet simplified load-out mechanics, but every reviewer and most players agree the lack of true variety in maps and modes meant it was pretty easy to reach Battlefront Burnout. The reason for this, it seemed, was simply greed on EA’s part, and many people were angry that it was ‘holding out’ most of the content behind a 50 dollar season pass, yours truly included.

But either in defiance of that expectation--or a preemptive answer to it--EA and DICE have recently published a blog post talking a bit about a new DLC map for Star Wars Battlefront: The Battle of Jakku.

“Taking place 29 years before the events of Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™, The Battle of Jakku is a free DLC pack* that adds two new maps (including one for popular modes like Walker Assault and Supremacy) and a new mode to the game. The coolest thing is that it’s the only place you’ll be able to experience the pivotal events that help shape the look of one of the next iconic planets in the Star Wars universe.”

Notice the keyword there? Free. Apparently EA is going to make this addition available for every current owner of the game… and it seems this won’t be the only time, as well.

“Of course, we are also planning to support Star Wars Battlefront with new content well into the future. We will be adding more of what you love about the game, like new maps and Star Cards, for free in the coming months, in addition to all of the content we have coming with Season Pass. We’ll have more to share soon.”

This is… interesting. Unexpected coming from EA, but it would have been interesting regardless of the company responsible. Applaudable as well, given that the most cynical among us--myself included--would have never guessed EA would do such a thing. We’ll have to see how much content is free, and what the DLC maps look like, before we give them too much praise, though.

Still. This isn’t nothing. Good job EA and DICE.
