Fallout 76 took a risk when it launch. It took a singleplayer open-world RPG and made it into an online multiplayer game. Now they're taking a step into the more mainstream with Nuclear Winter: the Battle Royale game mode.
In Nuclear Winter, players can find an abandoned Vault 51. The vault has no Overseer. But an automated system only wants the best of the best to rule the vault. So they're pitting 52 players against each other in a new battle royale game mode.
Up to 52 players are dropped into the familiar world of Fallout 76's Appalachia as a giant wall of fire slowly encircles them. They will have to find weapons, armor, and supplies if they want to be the last one standing. The winner will win special rewards.
The official release of Nuclear Winter is not confirmed, but players can get a taste for it from June 10 until 17. During this time, the new mode will be available for testing. The full Fallout 76 game will also be free to play during this time, as a way for uneasy consumers to see how much the game has changed.
This announcement came alongside the details of Wastelanders, a separate update that will bring human NPCs and stat-based dialogue trees to the game. All of this is going to be free. By the way.
Fallout 76 is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
