In case you didn’t know this – and I really can’t imagine why you would – I’m a gigantic Age of Wonders fan. I got a demo for the game when I was 10, and it was my very first introduction into the world of PC gaming. I played that demo so much the map is basically engrained in my mind, and no lie, I’ve played Age of Wonders 3 more than I’ve played Skyrim and Civilization combined. Maybe that’s sad, but hell: everyone has their addictions.

Anyway, Age of Wonders: Planetfall was announced way before E3, but during the Epic Games E3 PC presentation, it showed itself off again and I gotta say, I am every bit as hype as I thought I’d be.

Emerge from the cosmic dark age of a fallen galactic empire to build a new future in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Build an empire with one of six unique factions, ranging from the militant Vanguard to the dinosaur-riding Amazons. Advance through each faction’s missions using wits, military strength and diplomacy, exploring planetary ruins and encountering other survivors as the history of a shattered civilization unravels. Fight, build, negotiate and develop technology toward a path to utopia in a deep single-player campaign, on random skirmish maps, and against friends in multiplayer.

So glad to see the Giant Penguins come back.

Anyway, we don’t know that much new about the game, considering, although it looks like it puts a greater emphasis in research and possibly diplomacy than the first Age of Wonders games, which were purely about conquest. Also, it’s obviously taking the fantasy elements that were in the first games and replacing them with Sci-Fi, which I think is just… great because both magic and technology can define an age as “wonderful” and that little detail just warms my heart.

Comes out on August 6th and I can’t wait.
