It seems our crass and cool bad boy can't stay on shelves. Duke Nukem 3D has once again disappeared from the Steam Marketplace, the 3rd time in the game's history.
Duke Nukem 3D officially released in 1996 for MS-DOS, but would in time be ported to Steam, iOS, PlayStation, Xbox, and more. The Steam version, released in 2013 as Megaton Edition by Publisher Devolver Digital, would be taken down 2 years later after an agreement with Gearbox Studios. It was quickly replaced by the Kill-a-Ton 2015 Collection in May of 2015. Before the end of the year, it too would be removed from the market. This left Steam absent of the game until late 2016, where Gearbox would release a remastered version of the game known as 20th Anniversary World Tour.
The story ended there, until now. As of last night, Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour has disappeared from Steam. Gearbox has not made a statement about this yet, so the reasoning for the change remains unknown. This may, however, be in relation to the rumored Duke Nukem movie idea. Or, like before, the intellectual property is preparing to switch hands once again. Regardless of why, this marks that something is going to happen to the series.
I have reached out to Gearbox Software regarding the matter. Stay tuned.
