Dragon Age: Inquisition was, surprisingly, one of the ‘transitional games’ that ultimately sat between two console generations, which historically has always been a very awkward time to be released. Doubly so when you’re releasing the next game of a series -- you want to make the jump to the next console, but you also want to cater to the fans who won’t be able to make that jump with you. Plus, if you’ve been developing for the previous generation title beforehand, then you have the additional issue of trying to transfer it onto the next-gen title. And no matter what you do or where you started, you’ll have people complaining that the last-gen game is ‘lesser’ in content or graphics while the next-gen owners are afraid of being tied to the last generation will make the more contemporary version ‘lesser’ as well.

Awkward, like I said.

Regardless of the years, it’s been since either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3 has been in the limelight, EA and Bioware have been pretty good about making sure the past gen version of Dragon Age Inquisition got all the goods and updates that current-gen owners are enjoying. However, unfortunately, that’s about to come to an end: Bioware has just announced that any and all future DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition will be exclusive to the current generation of consoles.

That’s the bad news. However, they do have some good news: they’ve set up a save transfer feature in case any last generation owners happen to upgrade to a more modern console. You can’t exchange data between PCs or between different console types (no PS3 data into a Xbox One sadly), but you can transfer as many files as you want, and in a surprising move of generosity, any DLC you already have will be made available to you for free.

If there’s any other good news in this, at least it’ll help Bioware develop new DLC faster, since they’ll only have to design it for three different pieces of hardware, rather than five.

Another stark reminder of the things lost with the release of each new console, I guess.
