Doom, the should-have-been-winner of the 2016 Game Awards, is still around and kicking, periodically getting updates from Bethesda in an effort to keep the single-player game relevant through it’s not-very-good multiplayer. But apparently, enough people are still playing it to justify the latest free Doom patch, which adds a whole bunch of new content to the game that will help with balancing as well as boredom.
First and foremost, there’s a new multiplayer mode called Infernal Run, which is basically just Capture the Flag: take a flaming eyeball and deliver it to a zone on the opponent’s end of the map to get some sweet points.
There’s also a new rank for players to acquire, Echelon 11, and upon reaching his lofty rank, you’ll unlock the traditional space marine armor, the Predator suit.
Oh, and the game also has bots, which you can play against them to practice for the actual multiplayer without getting crushed by more experienced players, which is nice. These bots will only be available for Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, but hey, coding AI is hard. And, of course, to celebrate, there’ll be a double XP event going on this weekend, ending three days short of Bloodfall, the final paid DLC for the game.
Pretty cool, right? Right.
