Fortunately, it seems that one method of tomfoolery, specifically the use of Microtransactions or an in-game store, will be absent from the game… at launch, at least.
You never know how long these things will last.
This was confirmed by Creative Director Hugo Martin, who on Facebook wrote this:
"Eternal is a $60 game, not a free-to-play game or a mobile game—we are giving u [sic] a complete experience with no store just like you'd expect."
He clarified that while there will be cosmetics to unlock for the multiplayer component of the game, all of it is unlocked exclusively through XP gain, and furthermore will have no bearing on your ability to kill demons and/or other players. It’s all just cosmetics, and if it’s based on XP gain and not in-game currency, that means it’s mostly just to show off how good you are.
This is consistent with the first Doom, which also had all its cosmetics unlockable through XP gain, although it did have (relatively cheap) multiplayer DLC that included new guns, demons, and maps. That’s generally a band plan for multiplayer modes, splitting the audience like that, and while it hasn’t been confirmed if they plan on doing that again, we can always hope the answer is no.
Doom Eternal is set to launch on March 20, so you don’t have that much longer to wait.
