Doom Eternal Isn't the End of Doom Slayer's Story, Predictably

Who could have guessed they'd want more sequels?

With the Doomguy/Doom Slayer having ended Doom: Eternal by killing the Doom version of God, Satan, and just about everything in-between in the latest DLC, one might assume that there’s nowhere else for the old chap to go. But just because the story of this Doomguy is functionally “over” doesn’t mean that Doom is coming to an end, which is actually fairly obvious, since it’s one of the biggest gaming IP’s of all time. But how it’s going to continue is a big of a tricker question, one that’s been kind of answered by Doom Eternal game director Hugo Martin during an interview with Polygon.

“While this is the end of the story arc that began in Doom (2016), we planted a lot of stakes in the ground with that story… And we’ve been able to flesh out a lot of those things throughout the course of [Doom Eternal] and to do two DLCs. So that story arc will end, you know, from the time you woke up in the sarcophagus to the end of the DLC, but there are more stories to tell with the Doom Slayer, for sure.”

Like I said: kind of answered. If you were hoping for more details, you’re straight out of luck, but Hugo Martin did offer some idle suggestions on all the different directions they could go with it:

“Could we tell a story about when [the Doom Slayer] first came to that place with the Sentinels, almost like a more medieval setting, a fantasy setting? I think as you play the DLC, too, you’ll see lots of hints of what we could do moving forward. Maybe even in the future. Again, our hero is somewhat timeless — I mean, literally, he’s immortal. So we could tell all kinds of stories.”

Well, the hordes of hell are also pretty limitless, so as long as there are demons to slay, I imagine Doomguy will have something going on.
