The recent reboot of the old classic, Doom, hits aces on all marks: it perfectly re-captures all the thrilling strafe-based gunplay of yesteryear's first-person shooting, foregoing reloading, regenerating health, and cover for running, gunning, and more demon guts than you know what to do with. People loved it, and if they had any complaints, it's merely that the game wasn't long enough. So, it was with a great deal of anticipation that Bethesda Software revealed the first DLC pack for the game: Unto the Evil, which... is just a bunch of stuff for the broken, largely unfun multiplayer.
Wheee.
Well, whatever, it's coming next week (August 5th), and to celebrate the arrival of this $15 DLC, not only is the game having a double XP weekend for multiplayer, running until July 31st, it's also including the first batch of free updated content, which includes a capture the flag mode for one of its maps, Exodus, a capture and hold mode for Sector, and adds extra hell modules, a weapon wheel, and jump pads to the game's also-infrequently used Snapmap. Check out the trailer, yo.
So, basically, they're using this DLC and free update to try to bring value to the two modes people care about least in their game. You know, I can kind of understand their logic, wanting to improve the weak points, but I think I speak for a lot of people when we say we'd rather have more of the stuff we liked. Or, at the very least, not to charge 15 bucks for three maps, a new demonic transformation, and two weapons. It feels a bit steep for a mode that's already struggling to get by.
Oh well. What do I know? I'm not Bethesda.
