Game development studio Maze Theory recently posted an announcement detailing an increase in investments toward the company, as well as their plans for upcoming game titles. This included the reveal of two more Doctor Who games, one for consoles and PC and another for mobile devices.
The company was given increased funding from the UK Creative Content EIS Fund in association with the British Film Institute. They also received the Immersive Technology Investment Accelerator grant from the Governments UKRI Audiences of the Future Programme. Lastly, the received an investment by the UK Creative Content EIS Fund.
But what about the games?
The increased investments are allowing the studio to develop a Doctor Who franchise expansion, turning the recently released title into the beginning of a trilogy of games.
The first game in the trilogy is Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, an immersive VR title released in November of last year.
The second game will release "early next year" with a non-VR title for the PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch. No details about what this game will be like were given, however. Though if we were to speculate, we think it will likely be a 3D, first-person experience, based on their efforts with the VR game.
The third game will be a mobile title developed in partnership with Kaigan Games. They describe it as a "horror/sci-fi mobile phone takeover game," though we aren't sure what that means exactly.
Maze Theory provided the following statement about what to expect. While it doesn't make the picture much clearer, it does help shed some light on what to expect.
"Fans can expect new adventures, new game mechanics, intriguing subplots and iconic features such as the TARDIS, terrifying Weeping Angels, imposing Daleks and of course - the chance to collude with the Doctor herself."
This is great news for Doctor Who fans. The series has been a major aspect of nerd culture for decades. But it's somehow gone fairly under-represented in video games. We hope that the games can do the series justice.
The announcement also talked about another IP they're working on, Peaky Blinders. They're currently producing a VR action-adventure game based on the series of the same name, set to release some time next year.
