Disgaea Creator Making New Horror Game

Severely lacking in Penguins, sadly.

Have you heard of Nippon Ichi Software?

It could go either way, with this one. While they are the developers behind such cult hits (or cult duds) like The Last Rebellion, The Witch and the Hundred Knight, and The Guided Fate Paradox, they’re best known for their long-standing JRPG series Disgaea—which is one of those JRPGs you see people get really obsessed with but who can’t really explain why they like it so much. Like the video game version of Homestuck, I guess, but harder to cosplay.

Point is, they’re a pretty niche company. They’ve been around for nearly twenty-five years, and yet the vast, vast majority of the games they’ve produced have been JRPGs in very similar art styles. They know what they do, and by some accounts, they do it quite well.

Well, as it turns out, they might have finally gotten weary of JRPGs, and have moved on to the experimental world of Japanese Horror—and while nothing is official yet, a trailer has been leaked by a Japanese website called Gamestalk, and I have to say: it looks rather chilling… if I wasn’t distracted by the static ring of light created by the flashlight. That’s not how flashlights work.

The game, apparently called Yomawari, or NightWatch, is apparently coming to the PS Vita in Q4. We don’t know much beyond that, as Nippon Ichi Software has thus far refused to comment on the apparent leak.

We’ll have to see. For a very long time now, the only place you could get Japanese Horror games were Konami, or RPG Maker—but now that Konami has turned evil and RPG Maker has been flooded with pixilated horror, it would be nice to have a new hat thrown into the ring… and since it won’t be Nintendo or Sega, why not Nippon Ichi Software?
