Last month, we reported that Discord was apparently in negotiations with several companies — including Microsoft — who were looking to purchase the popular gamer-focused streaming and chatting software. Microsoft was so eager for the purchase they were apparently willing to offer a wad of 10 billion, but it seems even that many zeroes wasn’t enough, because it was just reported by the same inside sources that apparently all deals to buy out Discord are now off the table.
As for why, neither Discord nor Microsoft are speaking up, but it is known that Discord is instead planning on going public, trying to utilize its insane growth over the pandemic to rake in even more money. Good news for them, but it has the potential of being awful for their users, as a publicly-owned Discord would mean they’d become a lot more aggressive in both monetization and new user acquisition.
In either case, that’s the beginning and end of the story, as both companies have declined to comment. But we’ll have to keep our eyes on Discord for a while, because who knows? Maybe more shenanigans are brewing in the background…
I hope not. The last thing 2021 needs is more unpleasant surprises.
