Did Dark Souls 3 Almost Have a Battle Royale Mode?

Not your typical Battle Royale.

The infamous Soulsborne data wrangler, Lance McDonald, is at it again with more interesting information on what could have been in Dark Souls 3. In his most recent cut content video, he takes a look at the High Wall of Lothric area, where he finds three interesting items not included in the game: The Ceremony Sword of Darkness, The Ceremony Sword of Fire and The Ceremony Sword of Battle Royale Eclipse. Now, that doesn't automatically mean that Battle Royale was their intent, but let me explain each of these items individually.

It has been learned since tinkering with the game's executable that The Ceremony Sword of Darkness transports the player into a version of High Wall, which is shrouded in darkness during the Moonlight Ceremony. The Sword of Flame on the other hand can be used in contrast to invade players' worlds who have used the Sword of Darkness. These two work hand in hand with each other but where does the third come in?

There is no in-game description for this sword but McDonald suggests that it might have been another way to create a multiplayer event during the Moonlight Ceremony much like the other two swords. The term Battle Royale in Souls has been used before to describe arena modes, so one can assume it might have been an idea to expand on the PvP arena in Dark Souls 3.

Although this isn't the Battle Royale mode that is taking the world by storm, it is a fun idea to play around with. Soulsborne already doesn't give mercy to anyone who dies in-game, why not punish 99 people in one match?

Take a look at McDonald's full video below.
