Hearthstone Dev deals some harsh truths

It’s not much of a secret that gamers can be an abrasive lot, especially when talking about games or subjects they’re passionate about. They harass YouTubers, they harass critics and journalists, and of course, they harass the developers themselves, who oftentimes find themselves under a barrage of hate for merely doing their jobs, or saying something players don’t agree with. Sometimes, this harassment can be used for good, but mostly we utilize it to get angry about inane things like nerfs, buffs, and the prominence of butts in a character’s pose.

Blizzard, being the prevalent supplier of multiplayer games and butts, often finds itself with vocal opposition, and it’s gotten to the point where some developers aren’t in a hurry to put themselves in the line of fire. So confessed Hearthstone’s director, Ben Brode, over Reddit just the other day, when talking about the videos he makes for the game.

“I love doing videos, and I think I can convince more of the team to get involved, so it's not just me. Not everyone is as excited about being a public face as Yong and I are, though - there is a lot of harassment that comes with being more public.”

Yong, by the way, is a senior producer, who also makes videos.

So the news here is that developers and other game-makers might be more willing to step in front of cameras and chat if people were dicks less. Okay, that’s certainly an insight, but I’m not quite sure it’s a terribly unique opinion. Still, speaking as someone who doesn’t have a ninth of his fame, I’m clearly disqualified to speak on the subject. So, chew on that, internet trolls: think of all the more insight we could have into game making if ya’ll weren’t so mean.

Yeah. Now you feel bad, right?
