Devotion, the popular horror game with complicated Chinese relations, is a back again, two years after it was removed from online game stores.

Developed by Red Candle Games, Devotion is an indie horror game. While it was praised as a quality horror experience, what made the game memorable to the media was its removal from online stores like Steam and GoG. The removal was reportedly due to an in-game poster criticizing the president of China, Xi Jinping.

The poster contains text that, when translated, says Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh moron. This is a reference to a common internet trend from 2017, comparing the political figure to the childrens cartoon as a form of ridicule.

Seemingly in response to this, the game was pulled from various online retailers. Its believed that the stores did this to avoid conflict with China, which has a surprisingly large video game market. This didnt stop China from revoking the business license of the games publisher (Indievent) in retaliation.

This leads to the big question: How is Devotion back?

The developers have announced (via Twitter) that they have formed an online shop on their own website, and will sell DRM-free copies of the game to the public.

Their store platform will offer Devotion for $16.99. They will also sell their previous game, Detention, for $11.99. Both games will be free of any DRM.

Were happy to see Red Candle Games stay vigilant about their games. Making a successful game is hard enough without political pressure, especially with nations as controlling as China. We wish them the best of luck.
