In the current climate of gaming, you could throw a rock and it'd hit a news post about Sony PlayStation's shortcomings. A beacon of light was cast when they announced beta crossplay support for Fortnite, and now a second appears to be on the horizon as developers are claiming that PSN name changes are coming soon.
According to a report by Kotaku, multiple different game developers have spoken out to say that they're preparing their games for PlayStation Network name changes. Said preparation includes bug fixes, settings adjustments, and ensuring compatibility. One individual even shared an image from official Sony documentation, showing an "edit username" option next to a PSN profile. Due to the nature of secret information, all of the sources have chosen to remain anonymous.
The sources were unable to provide a time frame for the new feature's launch. Since PlayStation associates a player's PSN ID to their username, separating the two is problematic. Older multiplayer games may find the update process more complicated. Given this, it's anyone's guess as to when Sony will actually flip the switch.
It's very possible that PlayStation will follow the same theme as Microsoft Xbox, allowing one free name change, and charging a set dollar fee to do it every time after that.
I guess I'll have to stay xXxBlaz3r420xXx for a little while longer, still.
