Details about Apex Legends Season 3

A new legend, a new gun, and a whole new battle pass are on the way.

Unlike other Battle Royale games (or, rather, unlike the one other Battle Royale game people are still talking about), it’s a bigger deal when Apex Legends has an update. Not strictly because the updates are more impressive – I mean, putting Gotham City into Fortnite is pretty damn impressive by any measure – but because they’re fewer, far between, and since they aren’t the product of near-constant crunch I feel better about highlighting them. So there’s that.

And Apex Legends is about to have a pretty big update, as Season 3 is right around the corner, starting October 1. Let’s take a quick look at the kinds of things we can look forward to.

Season 1 of Apex Legends didn’t offer much except one new character, some sad cosmetics, and a weak battle pass. Season 2 was far more substantial, adding flying monsters and roaming… dinosaur… giraffes, changing the landscape of the island, hosting two events that changed or updated the map and lore of the world, as well as adding a new gun and a new Legend, Wattson.

Season 3, called Meltdown, is looking to be something in-between.

There is a new legend, which we’ve known about for some time: Crypto, who uses “specialized surveillance drones” to scout and spy on the enemies while staying out of sight himself. There’s going to be a new battle pass, of course, and it looks to be far more similar to the Season 2 battle pass than the Season 1 one, so that’s good. A new weapon – probably exclusive to drop pods – called the Charge Rifle is entering the fray, and of course, the ranked season will reset.

We’re just over a week before the new season launches, so if Apex Legends does have any more big surprises for Meltdown, we’ll almost certainly hear about it before the end of the week.
