Destiny Officially Cuts Ties with Old Consoles

And it's a sad day for all. Well. Some.

Destiny falls into one of those rare few games that's actually been released on consoles both old and new, launching on the Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Of course, maintaining and supporting the older versions of the game has been quite the hassle for Bungie, as increasingly fewer people use the old consoles, which are also less powerful and not as frequently updated. This is not only a pain to develop around but could also hurt their ability to make better, more full experiences for the players who are on modern consoles.

It was only a matter of time before Destiny finally decided to leave the old consoles behind, and that time will be the launch of Age of Iron, which will not be coming to the old versions of the game, meaning they'll be stuck where they're at... forever. However, just because these games will stop getting new content (Re-dubbed "Legacy" counsels) doesn't mean they'll stop being supported entirely. They'll still get "stuff", it just won't be new, and it'll be at a much slower pace.

On Legacy consoles, Destiny players will still have access to strikes, crucible challenges, and heroic missions. You can still do raids and boss encounters, Prison of Elders, Challenge of Elders, Armsday Orders, and Test Weapons will also continue to be available, and have the normal rewards to boot.

Xur will still be peddlin' stuff, but it'll be more limited. Individual Exotic Weapons and Armor pieces will no longer be sold by Xur. Encrypted Exotic Engrams will be sold. These will decrypt into Year 2 Exotics. Encrypted Legacy Engrams will continue to be sold. These will decrypt into Year 1 Exotics. Heavy Ammo Synthesis, Three of Coins, Vehicle Upgrades, Motes of Light, and Glass Needless will continue to be sold as well.

Other things that will be lost after August 2016 includes Trials of Osiris, the Iron Banner Crucible and access to live events, which include limited-time events, such as Festival of the Lost, Crimson Days, or the Sparrow Racing League.

This is, of course, bad news for Destiny fans still stranded on the old consoles, but it's also kind of inevitable, and some support is better than none. Still, as long as they enjoy and love the game, even with less content, they can keep playing... until the server is inevitably shut down. Which it will. Just give it time.
