Sometimes matches in competitive game, video game or traditional sports, are ruthless. The other team gains such a large upper hand that it's impossible to catch up. You feel embarrassed and more importantly, the lack of will to continue. For cases such as this, there is the Mercy Rule, when if the gap between scores of teams are too far apart, the match is called off early.
Well, no more will you have to rage quit in Destiny's PvP, because "Mercy Rule" is coming. In The Taken King/2.0 updates, a "Mercy Rule" will be added in Crucible, which acts like the rule found in traditional sports. When the game is unrecoverable for the losing team and loses its fun luster, the match will end.
According to Senior designer Andrew Weldon on Bungie.net:
"When the Mercy Rule hits, Shaxx will call out the end of the match. We immediately disable join in progress to prevent any additional players from joining the game (if anyone has dropped already) and reset the game close to :10 seconds. After those 10 seconds, the match will end normally. All players will receive their end of match rewards and return to matchmaking."
The Mercy Rule will head to Destiny on September 8 via Destiny 2.0 update and will be enabled for all team playlists save for Elimination and Trials of Osiris. Additionally, Bungie will strive listen to player feedback about the Mercy Rule and adjust if needed.
"The 2.0 Mercy Rule check is a very simple query that is good at identifying games that get out of hand early, but not necessarily games that pull away late. You may in some cases still find yourself in games where you feel like it should have been triggered. We will, as always, continue monitoring our UR data as well as player feedback to determine how we can continue to improve it and make it more accurate in the future."
To balance matters, the winning team in a match where the Mercy Rule is initiated will receive the gold-tier medal "No Mercy." This is just one of many quality of life updates coming to 2.0. All in all, this seems like a fair move. I definitely understand the frustration of losing a match so badly that it feels frustrating to continue forward.
Hopefully, less rage-quitting will happen soon.
