Destiny 2 Devs Outline Three More Years of New Content

But it comes at an unfortunate cost.

Destiny, the popular multiplayer sci-fi shooter game by Bungie, has established itself as one of the most popular titles of this game generation. Growth of that size comes with growing pains. But Bungie isnt giving up on Destiny 2. As a matter of fact, theyve outlined how they will introduce three more expansions over the next two years.

In a recent livestream, the developers revealed three new expansions: Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, and Lightfall. Each expansion is set for release in 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively.

But this is too much content, if that can be a thing. According to Bungie, they will begin to cycle out older content to reduce strain on the game services when introducing new content. This means that destinations like Mars, Titan, and Mercury will be removed from the game, replaced by upcoming sites like Eropa, Tangled Shore, and more.

"Destiny 2 is too large to efficiently update and maintain. The size and complexity of the game are also contributing to more bugs and less innovation, Bungie Explained. Each year, we are going to cycle older, less actively played content out of the live game and into what we're calling the Destiny Content Vault (DCV). This will allow us to add to and support D2 for years, including the three new annual expansions we announced today, starting with Beyond Light this fall."

Why all of the fuss keeping Destiny 2 Alive?

Some folks have been asking when Destiny 3 will be revealed, instead of severing old content to keep Destiny 2 alive. Bungie responded to this exact concern, explaining that by having Destiny 2 be separated from the first game, they unintentionally divided their player base

"With Destiny 1, we solved the 'ever expanding, exponential complexity' problem by making a sequel in Destiny 2'. We left behind all of Destiny 1's content and many of the features players grew to love. We believe now that it was a mistake to create a situation that fractured the community, reset player progress, and set the player experience back in ways that took us a full year to recover from and repair. It's a mistake we don't want to repeat by making a Destiny 3. We don't believe a sequel is the right direction for the game and for the past two years we have been investing all of our development effort into new content, gameplay, and new engine features that directly support a single evolving world in Destiny 2."

We suppose this is better than waiting several years for a new game. Destiny players will have a steady stream of new content over the next three years, at least.
