Deaf Destiny Player Petitions for Closed Captioning

Deaf Destiny Player Petitions for Closed Captioning

Here's hoping it won't fall on... er, never mind.

Destiny might not be the world-changing sci-fi explosion that Halo turned out to be (a game that almost single-handedly turned our two-horse console war race into a trifecta) but it's still quite popular and expansive, with its popularity ebbing and flowing as new expansions and content are released for the game, making it better, worse, then better again. But as the game changes and evolves, getting and losing attention, there are a few loyalists who are genuinely interested not only in playing the game but experiencing the world the game takes place in.

Unfortunately, for some players, that's easier said than done: while the game does employ closed captioning for cutscenes and important dialogue when it comes to random NPC chatter, there's nothing to help our hearing-challenged Guardians stay in the loop. Fortunately, one recently went to Reddit to appeal to his fellows to try to get Bungie to lend him an ear, pun intended.

hello, DTG. I am tigersharkdude and am DEAF . I am asking if you all could help me start a petition to ask Bungie to caption the random NPC dialogue (think engram remarks from Rahool, Variks saying stuff to you in the Reef when you walk by, Shaxx telling you to 'show them no mercy', etc, etc. Before anyone asks, Yes, I do have subtitles on and no, half the dialogue has no subtiltes

Since then, the thread has blown up, getting 4700+ upvotes (and counting) and over 500 comments showing support for the cause. They even got in touch with Destiny's community manager, Cozmo, who said they would "consider adding to the future."

A little too ambiguous, if you ask me. Accessibility is the least Bungie can offer to players who have a handicap, especially since there are points in the game where audio cues are necessary to properly fight. Still, the fact there's so much support for this is encouraging... if only the gaming community could be more supportive of other minority groups trying to get representation.

Ah well. Baby steps, people.
