With a friggin’ Tetris Trilogy apparently still in the works, it’s hard to be excited about any upcoming video game movies. I mean, I hear Rampage is… alright, but still, it’s not exactly going to be the earth-shaking blockbuster we need to prove video game movies work. We already had a movie that was supposed to do that: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. And not only is that not based off a video game, but chances are you didn’t even see it in theaters, you morons.
But I digress. Despite a history of sucking, video game movies are here to stay, and by the looks of it, David Leitch – the director behind Deadpool 2, an upcoming Fast and Furious spinoff, John Wick (uncredited), and Atomic Blonde – is going to take another crack at putting video games on the silver screen with a movie version of… The Division.
Now, this guy has proven himself to be awful skilled at directing action sequences, so I don’t doubt he’s up to the task of making a good movie. My concern, rather, is that The Division just isn’t very good source material. The plot – such as it is – is that a plague that spread through cash on Black Friday causes New York City to turn into a lawless wasteland, a plot that would have made a lot more sense before people realizing shopping online is both easier and more fun. Regardless, the chaos causes Mr. President to unleash his secret army of highly-trained citizen soldiers in an effort to contain the disaster.
That could be a good movie, sure, but the idea of the president having a secret army only answerable to him was a lot more, uh, “likable” before some recent current events. So they would either have to slightly adjust the premise or maybe throw some comedy in there to lighten the mood.
Either way, I’m not optimistic.
