If you wanted to try Monster Hunter World but you didn’t want to pay for it, then you’re probably one of the 6 million people who, over the weekend, installed and played Dauntless.
The game didn’t exactly come out of ‘nowhere’, we’ve actually known about it for quite some time, but it launched for real (as a sort of open beta) last week, and apparently people have been digging it. This is likely helped by the fact that for some reason, Phoenix Labs was able to do the impossible and make the damn thing well-and-true cross platform, something not even Apex Legends was able to accomplish. That must be important, because apparently over 60% of the player base are console gamers teaming up with PC peeps – at least, according to the Phoenix Labs people.
Maybe there would be more people on PC if it wasn’t an Epic Games exclusive, though. Who can say.
In any case, it’s an extremely strong launch window, but if it can keep that momentum is anyone’s guess. Monster Hunter World certainly was able to, but it was able to release a lot of free content and cool little tie-ins with other Capcom products (also, The Witcher). Will Dauntless be able to stay strong even without that kind of boost?
We’ll have to see, won’t we?
