Dataminer Leaks What Might Be the Next 4 DLC Fighters for Smash

Possibly spoilers, but probably not.

To call Super Smash Brothers Ultimate a smash hit is more than just a cunning play on words - it’s also an understatement. The game has sold gangbusters so far (the holiday season certainly helped with that), generating hype even through the Game Awards when Joker was revealed to be the first of five special DLC characters that would be coming post-launch. And Joker did more than make the Persona fanboys squeal with delight: it signaled that the kind of fighter DLC we’d be getting would be unexpected and exciting. Way more exciting than last generation’s Corrin, in any case.

It shouldn’t be any surprise, then, that people would be speculating on what the new champions will be. And thanks to some new Data Miners, we have a new list of possible newcomers, which range from the expected to the downright baffling. But then again, if Bayonetta could make it in Smash, nothing’s really off the table anymore, now is it?

The dataminer in question, one jam1garner, has put forward the following four names:
  • Erdrick, the main character from Dragon Quest
  • Steve, the default name for the player’s avatar in Minecraft
  • Ryu Hayabusa, of Ninja Gaiden fame
  • And the Doomguy.
Those first two are perfectly believable. Dragon Quest is enormously popular in Japan and has had a long and storied history on Nintendo consoles. Frankly, the fact that it hasn’t shown up earlier is more surprising than seeing it included now. And Minecraft has the kid-friendly appeal and the lasting power to certainly warrant a spot on the list, especially since they’ll be releasing a new Minecraft game soon, called Dungeons, which will be available on the Switch.

The latter two, though, are where things get interesting, but a little harder to believe. Ninja Gaiden did have its start on Nintendo, and the 30-year anniversary is coming up, but it’s gone in a very different direction since those ancient days and it’s been a while since we’ve seen it with Nintendo. Doom Guy, on the other hand… well… the reason that’s a little sketchy is pretty obvious. But then again, Doom Eternal is coming to the Switch as well, and if Bayonetta can do it…

…Well, let’s just say I really look forward to seeing how they plan to announce it, if it does actually happen.

But that’s a pretty big if. Remember, fans love speculating and lying about Smash games, so take this with as much salt as you can stomach.
