When Bethesda announced Skyrim: Special Edition, which had improved graphics over the original and all the DLC content, the news came with a pleasant little twist: if you had the original PC version of Skyrim and all the DLC already, then you could be upgraded to the Special Edition for free. It was a nice, low-cost way of thanking the biggest fans, and when Namco Bandai announced they would be remastering Dark Souls 1 for PC, some fans started getting hopeful that they might get the same deal… or, at the very least, some kind of discount for upgrading.
Namco Bandai has since dismissed those rumors by saying there simply won’t be one, which is disappointing… but what makes this news “interesting” isn’t the lack of a discount, but the confusing and muddied way we learned such a thing.
On Resetera.com, a forum post had a screenshot that claimed that PC owners would get a 50 perfect discount. Sounds good, but then a Namco Bandai spokesperson told journalists that they had been told that it was the same price across all platforms with no discount for base game holders. But that was confused even further with Dark Souls authority and occasional spokesperson VaatiVidya said that Namco Bandai told him that they simply refuse to comment on the possibility of a discount.
That’s when Namco Bandai community manager Izmar took to the Steam Forums to reconfirm what VaatiVidya was told and that there was no official announcement regarding a discount. Seems wrapped up, but then a Namco Bandai spokesperson contacted PC Gamer who reiterated the first message that there won’t be a discount and the original screencap that suggested there would be one was, in fact, an old copy that had been deleted internally because it was no longer true.
That’s a long and twisted journey for twenty bucks, eh?
The letter didn’t exactly refute the idea there would never be a discount, but considering the mess that it caused and the fact they don’t really need a discount for people to buy into the game again, it seems unlikely it’ll be offered. Which sucks, but that’s business for ya.
Oh, and also, it won't have cross-platform play. This is looking like a rawer deal with every passing day, eh?
