Dark Souls, my favorite series and the one I most frequently revisit (if we exclude MOBAS, which I am, shut up I don’t have a problem), has a bit of a problem in that it’s kind of spread out across generations. While Dark Souls 2 got Scholar of the First Sin, which carried the weakest game of the franchise over to the modern console, Dark Souls 1 stuck in a crappy PC port and on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Worse still, the real grandpappy of the series, Demon’s Souls, is exclusively on the PS3, and only really exists for a few weeks every year when fans celebrate its release with a throwback celebration.
Sadly, Demon’s Souls is likely to stay lost to the annuls of history, but Dark Souls may yet be salvaged: there are rumors that a full HD remake of the first game, paired with both sequels and all the DLC, is coming to the PC, Xbox One, PS4… and the Nintendo Switch.
That’s right. According to rumors spread by the folks by Lets Play Video Games (perhaps the most straightforward gaming website title I’ve yet found), the folks at From Software have a copy of Dark Souls 3 that’s actually playable on the Switch. Now, this could be simply for testing the hardware, but the sources are reporting that From Software actually plans on making the whole collection available for Switch users, IF the console generates enough sales to be worth their time.
From Software, for what it’s worth, has expressed support for the Switch, and vowed to supply it with games.
Now, I’d absolutely believe that From Software would make an HD re-release of the 3 main Dark Souls games, that was hardly even a doubt in my mind. But to release it for a Nintendo Console – A Nintendo Console with questionable controllers, at that? Consider me skeptical. That said, if Nintendo was willing to give Skyrim high marks on their commercial, it proves they’re interested, at least, in courting the hardcore gaming crowd… and what would do the job better than Dark Souls?
We’ll have to see.
