I don't think I'm going to shock anyone when I tell you Dark Souls is popular.
What's cool about Dark Soul's popularity, however, isn't so much that it exists so much as how it started. It's easy to forget, with how much hype surrounds Dark Souls 3, but when this whole "souls" thing started, it was a relatively small, largely ignored game on the PS3 called "Demon's Soul's" that was almost not even localized for the states. Yet, the masterful design of the game actually caught the attention of enough of a vocal minority that the gaming world as a whole could discover this revolution of the RPG.
And now, not only has Dark Souls 3 become a worldwide phenomenon, selling more copies faster than any other game in Namco Bandai's history, but it has such clout among fans that the moment an independent and officially backed board game developer proposed a Dark Souls board game over Kickstarter, asking for $70,000 USD to make it a reality... well...
At time of writing, after two days of fundraising, the game has raised a gigantic sum of $924,756 in funding. And by the time you actually read this, it will no doubt be even larger. It goes up by the minute.
Wow.
Of course, it takes more than name recognition to get you that far--although the designers, Steamforged games, certainly have that, having made a medieval-themed football game called Guild Ball in the past--the game itself also needs to look good. And boy, does it ever: it's a 1 to 4 player experience, cooperative or competitive, where you have to make your way through an area, slay enemies, and reach the boss. Managing your equipment and estus is paramount, as is the case in the game proper, and what's more, when you battle, you have to pay attention to positioning, and what attack pattern the bosses will have so you know exactly how to react to every situation.
It's all very complicated, I suggest you check out the page itself here, if you're interested in learning more, or simply if you want to donate.
It looks extremely cool, no lie. I can't want to see how it comes out, and how much money it actually makes!
