You know, guys, youll be hard pressed to find a bigger Souls nerd than myself: I scan the Reddit page daily, I contribute to the Wiki, I purchase the novelty shirts I love me my souls. Praise the Sun, yall.

And yet, I have to admit, when I saw the first trailer for Dark Souls 3, Im feeling a little underwhelmed. Here, lets watch it before I go further.

Already, it looks more promising than Dark Souls 2, whose trailer was a lot more adventure and action-packed than a Souls game ought to be, with as melancholy and morose as those games tend to be. That said even for a Souls aficionado like myself, theres not a lot to dissect here. Perhaps Im just out of touch because of all the Bloodborne Ive been playing, but the few scant images we get dont really tell us much, outside, perhaps, that the Canonical ending to Dark Souls 2 is where you refuse to kindle the flames and you break the cycle of the world.

Oh, and I guess the giant that can produce flames from inside its body is pretty significant: Perhaps thats the hollowed form of Flann, the important but barely-mentioned God of Flame and fire?

Regardless, heres the press release:

The DARK SOULS brand became a phenomenon thanks to amazing work from our dear partners FromSoftware and our very own BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment teams. said Herve Hoerdt, Vice President of Marketing & Digital at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe. But above all, we are blessed to have such a supportive and loving community, and we are happy to dedicate this final episode to them!

The last Souls game? Turning it into a Trilogy I guess if they mean it, I can get behind that. Between Bloodborne and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, Im getting some serious Souls fatigue, but hell, Ill still be as giddy as a schoolgirl when I get my hands on this baby.

Anyway. Heres a brief list of features we can look forward to:
  • 1-to-4 players
  • A sacrifice ritual allows you to enter other games, but puts a bounty on your head
  • Its now possible to create bonfires
  • The world can be altered in ways that change the bosses you fight
  • Players can equip swordfighting arts that act as special moves
Seems pretty exciting, especially that last bit: the combat of Dark Souls was always one of its strong points, and seeing them develop that further with extra customization should help bring some much-needed Variety to PvP, at least, if this is what Im imagining it to be.

Regardless, E3 has just begun: we cant let Dark Souls 3 steal all the spotlight!
