Gamescom 2015 has officially begun! That means another couple days of announcements, reveals, trailers and good times all around. So far, a lot has happened at this year's Gamescom—but we’re going to ignore it all because we got some gameplay of Dark Souls 3.
The trailer includes about half cinematic, half gameplay, and already I’m starting to draw some distinct first impressions: namely, the game seems to fall back to Dark Souls 2’s reliance on “dudes in armor” for enemies and bosses, although they might have more variety than we first expect. Seeing the giant enemy (presumably boss) fills me with a bit of dread, as the Souls series has never been especially good at creating memorable bosses at that scale (Dragon God and Old Iron King, respectively) It’s good to see the shield return, but I also notice the instant backstab is making a return as well, which should make PvP an annoying cluster of rolling and sidestepping, as it was in ages past. Still, we can see what may be Bloodborne levels of weapon variations and movesets, which would be the thing I would want to see most brought over into the Souls series.
As for plot—there were tidbits I’m not sure I feel comfortable addressing now, but what struck me most was the bit near the end. We’ve known for a long time what the basic outline of the plot would be: it’s the age of dark and you’re out to hunt down the lords of cinder who are apparently coming back to life. What’s interesting, however, is the character wielding the swords commonly found wedged in Bonfires: just seeing him (or her!) carrying it outside the flames seemed… odd. Cool, but odd.
We’ll have to wait till later before we learn anything else, sadly.
