At least No Man’s Sky was making specific promises it was going to break. But speaking at the Pareto Securities Gaming Seminar last week, the most specific thing CEO Adam Kicinski promised was that it would be a “true RPG” and “our new Witcher 3,” whatever that means:
"Cyberpunk is our new Witcher 3, but even more ambitious. Our goal is to establish a new blockbuster franchise from the beginning. We work [in a] new universe, futuristic universe. We believe it's very appealing to players, not only RPG players—but this is [a] true RPG, like Witcher, like Witcher 3, for mature audiences. It's handcrafted, detailed, of course open-world, with open-ended gameplay. Great game, more ambitious than Witcher 3, and we believe that we can aim [at] more ambitious business goals as well—of course, still having gamer-centric focus and quality focus as a main priority."
Frankly, that kind of description is not helpful. That said, the game is slated to appear at this year’s E3 later in June, but only for a select audience rather than a public viewing. This is fairly suspicious, as E3 trailers are always overhyped and pre-rendered, so it’s not like they would have to worry about being knocked down for that. There’s not much reason to keep it a secret, beyond dragging this out longer than it needs too.
But man, enough is enough. You guys ain’t Kojima - you can’t get away with this forever.
