Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Apologize for Bugs, Promise Future Fixes

They also said they'd stop crunching, but I have my doubts.

Cyberpunk 2077 was a disaster. A disaster perpetrated, in part, by our own wildly inflated expectations, but a disaster nonetheless: the game was in development for eight years and went through an extended period of crunch, and yet it released a buggy mess that caused physical harm to some of the people who played it. The situation was so bad that Microsoft and Sony have even offered special refunds to people who bought the game, and in the days since, CD Projekt Red has been in crisis mode tying to manage a game that was supposed to remain popular and relevant over the next two to three years.

As part of their ongoing apology tour, CD Projekt Red just released a new video, which amounts to a 5-minute apology for how badly they messed up.

Dear gamers, here's CD PROJEKT’s co-founder’s personal explanation of what the days leading up to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 looked like, sharing the studio’s perspective on what happened with the game on old-generation consoles. For more details about the progress being made on Cyberpunk 2077’s further development, including information about updates and improvements, free DLCs, and more, please visit cyberpunk.net/ourcommitment

Their timeline includes several major patches that will address bugs and performance issues, with extra focus on the console versions that were in such a sorry state. It also includes the first wave of DLC, which is supposed to come out sometime before the end of the year, although a specific time wasn't offered.

They also announced, over on the Q&A page, that they would not be crunching to pull this off.

The team is working to bring relevant fixes to the game without any obligatory overtime... Avoiding crunch on all of our future projects is one of our top priorities.”

But don't take their word for it, it's not as if they haven't lied about this kind of stuff in the past.

Either way, Cyberpunk 2077 is just the latest in an increasingly large list of games that feel the need to apologize for the state of their launch. One has to wonder if the industry can even do that right anymore.
