As the days claw past at an agonizingly slow pace, new details surrounding CD Projekt Red’s latest project, Cyberpunk 2077, continue to trickle into our thirsty, thirsty mouths. We’re supposed to get our first “solid” look at this year’s E3, where there will apparently be a special presentation behind closed doors for very specific people, but until then, we have to make do with what scraps we can find. And in this case, a few more details have come to the light thanks to CD Projekt Red’s financial presentation regarding their results for 2017.
During the chat with their investors, the studio talked about how this upcoming game would utilize a class-based character growth structure, that it wouldn’t have microtransactions (which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, but it’s still good to hear), and despite earlier talks of the games multiplayer component, it would still focused on single-player. That said, multiplayer – as well as other expansion content – could be added post-launch. And yes, a battle royale mode was mentioned as a possibility. Because the games industry is nothing, if not a bunch of lemmings.
The other interesting thing that was revealed was that the game is apparently designed, specifically, to not only fit on modern consoles, but also onto next-gen consoles. While obviously none have been announced yet, president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński said that the game is “very advanced" and that it's "ready to interface with future generations.” If that means he’s gotten an exclusive look at next-gen consoles or if he’s just speculating, we don’t know. But we do know that there probably won’t be a Switch port. Because of course not.
People are going to be excited for this game no matter how long it keeps stringing us along like this. But I, personally, am still getting a little impatient with all this. Hopefully, the payoff is worth it.
