Cyberpunk 2020's Original Creator Defends CD Projekt Red

I guess you could say they've been under fire.

People seem to forget that CD Projekt Red is chronically incapable of working on their own IPs – I too, have made the mistaken claim that Cyberpunk 2077 was an original work. But in truth, the game is based off a tabletop RPG called Cyberpunk 2020 created by a gentleman named Mike Pondsmith way back in the past, who is also working together with CD Projekt Red to bring his universe to life in this upcoming, extremely hyped game.

This is important because people have been criticizing CD Projekt Red for including stuff in the game that, while authentic to the source material, isn’t exactly “PC” in the most traditional sense. For example: a gang of black people who are called “animals”. On the other side of the coin, they were criticized for seemed to change up the Voodoo boys, a gang that were originally made up of a bunch of white people but now seem a bit more, for lack of a better term, ‘authentic’. P

Well, Mike Pondsmith went to Reddit to tackle those critiques and defend his vision. The all caps are his, by the way, not mine.

1) If I wasn't heavily involved, I would be able to get more done. As it is, I barely have a life. 2) As for the Animals--the WHOLE FREAKING POINT is that they think of themselves as POWERFUL, DANGEROUS, WILD ANIMALS. You'd have thought the Lady named "Sasquatch" would have given them a clue. 3) The original Voodoo Boys were a scathing commentary on cultural appropriation. I LOVE the idea that real practicioners of Voudon moved in and took back their turf. And they even got the Creole right! 4) Who the (bleep) do YOU think you are to tell ME whether or not MY creation was done right or not?

Clearly he’s not a man overly concerned with being PC in his personal life either. Still, you can hardly fault him for passion, and the community on reddit seems more than happy to encourage that attitude. Good to see everyone is happy.

Well, maybe not Mike Pondsmith. He doesn’t seem very happy.
