Cuphead made headlines as one of the most popular indie games of 2017 and for good reason. Its run-and-gun mechanics, smooth controls, and art style are equally memorable and cherishable. So it should be no surprise that it appeared in the iOS App Store, right?
Right?
Well, yes, but not in the way you'd think. Piracy, cloning, and porting of titles onto the Google Play Store and App Store are a regular occurrence. Recently, a malicious app appeared in the App Store with the name Cuphead. Oddly enough, the "port" went to great lengths to replicate the console/PC versions. The description and screenshots, along with the developer bearing the same name as the studio (MDHR), made the title seem like it was... y'know, real. Even the price was believable - the "port" was $4.99.
The thing is, the true Cuphead remains on the Xbox One and Windows 10, and no port has been announced from the real developer. So off the bat, that fact alone should have been a red flag.
Studio MDHR reported on via Twitter that iOS Cuphead was, in fact, a scam, and that the studio was working to take it down. The App Store has since removed the scam.
